Yoga Retreats in Morocco: Where to Go, Costs and How to Choose

3 min read

Choose Taghazout for yoga with surfing, Essaouira for a quiet coastal town, Marrakech for culture and comfort, and the Atlas for mountain air. Published retreats range from about $285 for a short stay to more than $1,000 for a week.

Morocco suits a yoga retreat because you can be on a beach, in a medina or in the mountains within a few hours of each other. The right place depends less on the yoga than on how you want to spend the rest of the day.

What does a yoga retreat in Morocco cost?

Prices depend on the length of stay, the room and what is included. These examples come from retreat listings at the time of writing, and they will change:

  • 4 days in Taghazout: from about $285
  • 8 days in Taghazout: about $502
  • 4 days in Marrakech: from about $744
  • 6 days in Essaouira: from about $837
  • 7 days in Essaouira: about $1,087

Flights are usually extra. Before you compare prices, check whether the figure is for a shared room, and whether airport transfers, all meals and excursions are included.

What is usually included?

Most retreats offer one or two yoga classes a day, often a stronger session in the morning and a gentler one around sunset, along with accommodation and some or all meals. Many add a hammam, a cooking class, a beach ride or a day out. Time off is part of the point, so a good schedule leaves you room to do nothing at all.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for most of the country. Summer is very hot inland, but milder on the Atlantic coast. Winter is mild on the coast and good for surfing, while nights in the Atlas are cold and snow is possible on higher ground.

Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year. Retreats continue as normal, and it can be a moving time to visit, though daily life and restaurant hours change, especially outside the tourist areas.

How to choose a good retreat

  • Look up the teacher, not only the venue. Check their training and experience, and whether they teach your level.
  • Ask about the group size. Twelve people and thirty people are very different retreats.
  • Read the daily schedule. Is it two hours of yoga and free time, or a full programme from dawn?
  • Check the practice space. Ask whether there is a shaded or indoor room for hot, windy or rainy days.
  • Ask about food. Moroccan cooking suits vegetarians well, but tell them in advance about vegans, allergies and intolerances.
  • Read recent reviews. Look for reviews that mention the teacher by name.
  • Read the cancellation terms before you pay a deposit.

What if you don't want a group?

Group retreats run on fixed dates with people you have not met. That is exactly what some travellers want, and exactly what others don't. If you would rather travel as a couple, with friends or with your own teacher, a private trip lets you set the dates and the pace.

That is how we work: every trip with us is private. We do not sell group yoga retreats on fixed dates, but if yoga is why you are coming, tell us and we will look at how to fit it into your journey, along with time in places such as the Ourika valley or إمليل, and a traditional hammam at the end of the day.
